7th Nov.  At Neo Chorio.  A yellow wagtail hunted for insects in our log pile while a white wagtail looked on.
In Chania. We saw a flock of 35 starlings, a species I came here to try and get away from!

12th Nov.  At Neo Chorio.  We had lovely views of an orphean warbler which was still present the next day. Also on the 13th a single honey buzzard headed south.
At Tavronitis. A little grebe was fishing in the estuary. Further along the coast was a nice flock of 12+ tawny pipits together with a black redstart, while a booted eagle circled overhead.

22nd Nov.  At Tavronitis. A moorhen scuttled for cover at our approach, while at least 50 meadow pipits were foraging.

24th NovAt Nembros.  A female sparrow hawk was hunting a flock of short toed larks, about 20 of them, while it ignored the perhaps more agile meadow pipits. There were also 3 serin; and 2 rough legged buzzards.

25th NovAlong the coast.  2 late spotted flycatchers were busy feeding on small insects beside a shallow pool.

26th NovAt Kamisiana.  A classic juvenile lesser spotted eagle soared.
Out on one of the peninsulas. All we could find were 2 griffon vultures; a whinchat; a pair of ravens; a single lanner falcon; and a blue rock thrush.

bullet

28th NovOver a nearby gorge. We enjoyed seeing a pair of bonellis eagles; 5 griffon vultures; a pair of lanner falcons; a peregrine falcon; a blue rock thrush; and a group of 3 honey buzzards. The next day we went back and this time saw the bonellis eagles again; a single rough legged buzzard; a pair of lanner falcons; a pair of kestrels; a raven and 2 griffon vultures.
Near Sassolos. Were two pairs of golden eagles displaying, whilst a single griffon looked hungrily at a lone swallow trying to get down to the warmer south of the island.
At the vulture feeding station. Were a pair of adult bearded vultures together with a 3rd year plumaged bird. Also another griffon and a steppe buzzard.

And a few final words for November.....  Quite a good month with some good raptors seen.  As yet the wintering eastern imperial eagles have not shown up, but no doubt they are on their way and will soon tease us with their trying to hide behind the nearest mountain as if they really were that shy. The golden eagles put them to shame with their bold displays!

No doubt we are about to be overwhelmed with almost every bird species that exists as Christmas rears its head yet again. However you celebrate the festive season, do enjoy yourselves and make the most of what you have, Cheers!

Until next month, Good Birding!  Paul Smith.
